It is hard not to be a fan of Porsche when this brand paying as much attention to the graphic design of their racing posters as to fine-tuning their engines. And what is amazing is that all this 60’ 70’ Le Mans posters still look modern and beautiful.  Please take a look at this great selection we put together.

The BMW Art Car Project was introduced by the French racecar driver and auctioneer  Herve Poulain who wanted to invite an artist to create a canvas on an automobile. It was in 1975, when Poulain commissioned American artist and friend Alexander Calder to paint the first BMW Art Car. This first example would be a BMW 3.0 CSL which Poulain himself would race in the 1975 Le Mans endurance race. Since Calder's work of art, many other established artists throughout the world have created BMW Art Cars, including David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol. To date, a total of 16 BMW Art Cars, based on both racing and regular production vehicles, have been created.

“Less is More” is what NAIAS felt this year, even 3 Press days were cut down to 2 days because of many brands pulling out of the world biggest auto show this year, but nevertheless we found a few notable concepts from the automakers that managed to make it to the party this year…

French automaker Peugeot will pull the wraps off a brand-new concept vehicle called the SR1 at the Geneva Motor Show in March. SR1 isn't hallmarked by quirky, love-it-or-laugh-at-it styling. Instead, we finally see a traditional long-hood, short-deck profile with a short front overhang (YES!)

You’re looking at a British bike painted in the colors of an American oil company, designed to promote a Swiss watch made famous by a French motor race that became a theme in the movie Le Mans and glamorized even further by an American actor Steve McQueen playing in it…. Yes, it’s a stretch. Triumph has always paid a lot of attention to marketing, and especially to what you might call ‘fame by brand association’. But nevertheless I love it. All of it.

One of the most gorgeous automobiles was a created through a  true collaboration between brands, designers, engineers and countries and sadly never made it into production due to a simple series of mistakes as well as market realities and competition.

First some history about the AMX/3: The AMX/2 Styling prototype was designed by Richard Teague to participate in a call for designs from AMC. Others participated in this call for designs including Bizzarrini. (Other sources indicate that Giorgetto Giugiaro built a styling mockup, which was never shown to the public) The Teague design won by a long shot and was approved to the prototype stage.

The famous Porsche 917 racing car turned 40 this year. Porsche held special birthday celebrations for the 917 at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The theme for this year is ‘True Grit – Epic Feats of Endurance’. It is appropriate then that among the 917’s many achievements are back-to-back 24 Hours of Le Mans victories in 1970 and 1971. These results marked Porsche’s first successes at the world’s oldest sports car race.
